Teaching Adults English

Individual classes:

Teaching and tutoring individual classes to 18+ is very common with TEFL/TESOL qualifications.

If you work for an academy or by yourself you will encounter a range of different types of students.

The best part about teaching adults is that they are eager to learn and improve, and work with you honestly and respectfully.

Teaching individual classes really depends on the student, what they want, and what level they have. If they want to prepare a specific exam you can find out more on the exam preparation page.

However, many people are learning English as a hobby or goal, and don't want to be a specific 'level'.

The most important part is clear communication and a relaxed learning environment. I've made a guide with a few tips.

Individual class tips

Individual classes:

Work out how many lessons and a realistic goal you can achieve and make a base plan.

Sports are a common interest, but music, photography, art, pretty much everything can be tailored to very basic A1/A2 conversations, all the way to arguing and opinion forming for C1/C2 level

Although adult learners are very keen and push themselves, make sure they are retaining all the information.

Don't be afraid to communicate, make sure you're being understood and that the lessons are working for them.

Rephrasing is difficult when you can't think of another way to explain something! This gets easier as you get to know the student, but if not, try these tips.

- Explaining a simpler situation or a common real life context.

- Writing/drawing on the board

- Using humour to make the idea stick.

Group classes:

Teaching groups really depends on dynamics, it's important to get to know your students well and interact with them in various different ways throughout the classes.

Make sure to understand what the class want. Of course if you are following a specific course with a book make sure you explain what your plans are, homework etc.

Also remember that different students are on the course for different reasons, keep communication open between you and the class.

Group classes:

Here are some tips.

My main take away from teaching group classes is that different students have different schedules, and that different students may approach things differently.

Don't get frustrated by students who maybe fall behind, just try your best to keep them up to date with the classes, and continue to help their progress.
