International Phonetic Alphabet Consonants
All Consonants can be organised by Manner, Place and in some cases voice. To learn more about Manner and Place go back to the main phonetics page.
Here is a list of all consonants, with the IPA, common spellings and the manner and place of articulation.
You will also note that some have 'voiced' or 'voiceless'.
This is the difference between simply forcing air, or making a hum or vibration with the vocal cords. You can see that the only difference between /p/ and /b/ is the 'voice'
If you try to pronounce /p/ whilst adding voice, you will produce the sound for /b/ and saying /b/ with no voice gets /p/.
